Edinburgh Airport serves Scotland’s capital city, a vibrant business and leisure destination, famous for its annual festival and proud of its status as a world heritage site. It currently serves 9 million passengers a year, and is a transatlantic gateway, with flights to Newark, New York and Toronto. Edinburgh Airport was the busiest airport in Scotland in 2008. It was also the seventh busiest airport in the United Kingdom by passengers and the fifth busiest by aircraft movements. It is located 9 kilometers west of the city centre and the entrance is reached from the A8 Glasgow Road, and is close to the M8 and M9 motorways. The airport is a base of EasyJet and Ryanair. More than 40 airlines serve 100-plus destinations and some nine million passengers a year pass through the airport – figures which are set to grow as Scotland’s international connections develop. The present terminal building, designed by Robert Matthew, was constructed in 1977 and has been upgraded in recent years, with new car parking facilities and an extended arrivals hall. A new control tower was completed in 2005. There are plans for expansion of the airport, with passenger numbers expected to reach 26 million per annum by 2030. Over the next five years BAA plans to invest more than £100 million to improve the terminal and airfield facilities at Edinburgh Airport, with new state of the art security facilities, and more relaxation space, including a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants. By 2011, when the new development opens to passengers, Edinburgh Airport will be one of the most modern gateways in Europe, capable of handling 13 million passengers a year. Car rental office is now located in new car rental building, just outside the terminal building. Edinburgh Airport plays an important role in the life of this great city, supporting tourism industry which is the lifeblood of Edinburgh economy.
